Ausstellung des Projektes M°A°I°S (Multiplizität°Als°Ideenproduzierende°Struktur)

arena Berlin presents M°A°I°S 6: The Free Will
June 16 to July 31, 2005 at Bunker am Flutgraben

An International Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the Bunker in the Former Death Strip of the Berlin Wall in the Context of the Celebrations Marking the Occasions "Twenty Years after Glasnost" and "Ten Years of arena Berlin"

This catalogue documents artists' and authors' contributions to the project The Free Will, the sixth exhibition presented by M°A°I°S (Multiplizität°Als°Ideenproduzierende°Struktur – "Multiplicity As an Idea-producing Structure") and the first in which the participating artists were chosen by means of an international competition. A total of 381 artists from twenty-seven countries submitted concepts detailing their ideas and visions on the theme "free will," and how they proposed to implement them in the context of "twenty years after Glasnost" and the bunker located under arena Berlin. The jury was made up of seven artists: Sabine Beyerle, Silvina Der Meguerditchian, Clemens Krauss, Edgar L., Römer & Römer, and Addicted Spass. The exhibition is the first ever held at the site – a former cold-war bunker in what was once the "death strip" surrounding the Berlin Wall between Kreuzberg (formerly West Berlin) and Treptow (formerly East Berlin). The opening of the exhibition was attended by Mikhail Gorbachev. Various authors contributed essays to the catalogue illuminating the theme of "free will" from a variety of angles, i.e. from historico-cultural, scientific, religious, literary, and sociological perspectives.
