The Sun, the Beach, and the Ocean are Ours, You Can Keep the Rest!

The motif of the installation is a reference to the 1972 painting “Red Horizon” by Russian
artist Erik Bulatov. Two canvases in two adjacent rooms enter into a dialogue, joined by
a narrow, illuminated passageway. Shown on the canvases are motifs from Bulatov’s “Red
Horizon”. As motifs for the background we chose the national flags of states involved in
the East|West conflict, whereby the red banner of the Soviet Union was consciously omitted. The horizon motif draws on a general vision of yearning and freedom, which appears paradoxical in the context of a war bunker and is thus called into question. The debate on free will is ambivalently expressed through the direct physical experience of the cramped space and the questions raised in regard to freedom of thought by the visual representation of the theme.
