OK! - Dance to the machine | Installation

Ausgang der Installation ist die dreiteilige Fotoserie “OK”, die im Januar 2005 in St.
Petersburg, Russland, entstand und sich anhand der russischen Supermarkt-kette “OK”
mit dem gesellschaftlichen Wandel und dessen aktuellen Erscheinungsbildern befasst.
In den Aufnahmen zu “Wohlstands-Porträts” und “Sta(a)tussymbole” werden Realitäten
bewusst manipuliert und initiiert, um auf diese Weise ein Abbild des gegenwärtigen
gesellschaftlichen Zustands zu zeichnen. In “Konsum-Spionage” wird vor allem der öffentliche Raum vor den Supermärkten – auf den Parkplätzen – “ausspioniert”. Alle Fotografien werden Teil eines “Disco-Partyraums”, der - ausgestattet mit Disco-Kugel in Form einer “OK-Säule” und Disco-Nebel – den Blick auf die Bilder nur im Spot eines Spiegelmosaiks oder vernebelt zulässt. Der “Party-Charakter” der Installation stellt die Nachhaltigkeit der aktuellen Entwicklung in der von Krisen durchzogenen Vergangenheit Russlands in Frage.

OK! - Dance to the Machine

The installation is based on the three-part series of photographs “OK”, which was taken in
St. Petersburg, Russia in January 2005; it deals with societal change and its contemporary
manifestations, taking the Russian supermarket chain “OK” as an example. In the “Wohlstands-Porträts” (“Portraits of Prosperity”) and “Sta(a)tussymbole” (“Stat(e)us
Symbols”), realities are consciously manipulated and generated in order to create an image
reflecting the current state of society. In “Konsum-Spionage” (“Spying on Consumerism”),
public space in front of supermarkets – i.e. parking lots – is “placed under surveillance.” All
photographs are incorporated into a “Disco Party Room” equipped with a disco ball in the
shape of an “OK” advertising column and disco fog – so that the pictures can only be seen
either blurred by fog or refracted in the disco ball. The “party character” of the installation
calls the sustainability of the current development within the crisis-riddled history of
Russia into question.
