Robed in white, a woman and a man sweep the road clean. Four people in white cloaks pull a cart, which contains the rice. The messenger of paradise walks ahead of the cart; flower-children sprinkle the road with rice. Visitors can place their messages to paradise into an urn at the end of the procession. The procession moves into the bunker (into paradise). Once it has arrived, the urn is placed onto a pedestal, ready to receive more messages from future visitors. Toward the end of the exhibition, the messages are read out loud and publicly incinerated on the Alexanderplatz.

Paradise Documented: Approaching Past and Present [installation]

1964 Aschaffenburg/D

Berlin/D

One enters the accessible installation through a wardrobe, white like the entire piece. In it, the visitor finds robes, which he is instructed to put on. He can also read instructions on how to perform a brief cleansing ritual. Within the room itself, there is a video-projection. Its audio track plays classical music by musicians from Berlin, as well as spoken texts on paradise by Michael Luhnen. Lighting-flash shock-sequences interrupt the video's screening: reality and history assert themselves in the present. The piece should be remembered as paradise lost. The classical music used in the installation was played by the musicians Midori Seiler, Tobias Schade, Beni Araki, Martin Seemann, and Angelo Valtchev. They all live in Berlin.
